Bloom Where You’re Planted
This year’s annual DWA “gala” setting is an informal Afternoon Tea at the River House
Inn, where we will honor proprietor Gayle Winston, who is a native of Ashe County,
staunch Democrat, achiever against all odds, and a welcoming, cheerful hostess. For
her life of service, she was awarded in 2009 on her 80 th birthday with the Order of the
Long Leaf Pine, NC’s highest civilian honor.
Diana Renfro has written a biographical sketch in Mountain Memoirs, which begins with
the following accolade of Gayle:
“As purposeful as the New River that winds through her native Ashe County,
Gayle Hamby Winston has coursed through an extraordinary life of uphill challenges
and sudden turns. She is an astute businesswoman with a strong will to get things
done and she can be stubborn and tough when striving to do what she believes is best.
She is a staunch Democrat and a real people-person, a lover of find food and wine and
a fervent promoter of art and artists of all genres.”
We will also hear from Diana’s daughter, Caroline
Renfro, who is running for Ashe County Commissioner.
We invite you to join us for hors d’oeuvres, tea or wine (cash bar), and conversation
with other Democratic-minded women and men. In illustration of our theme, dahlia
bouquets will decorate the Inn and be available for you to purchase. We hope this
event will energize you to get involved in the mid-term election activity, be it postcard
writing, door knocking, phoning, posting yard signs, or donating to candidates. Let’s
blossom out this fall and turn our country around!!!

A Little About Us
We are The Democratic Women of Ashe County, NC
Our vision for our beloved Ashe County (whether by birth or by choice) is for Ashe County to be recognized as a place where forward thinking women are empowered and find community; where progressive political ideas are openly discussed and promoted; where government works for all people of the county; and where at least 50% of elected offices are held by women.
Achievement of our vision will require courage, commitment, and thoughtful action. Our focus is on establishing and strengthening relationships with a diverse and all-inclusive array of individuals and organizations throughout Ashe County and the State. We seek to diminish division and instead focus on commonalities and shared concerns.
Our goal is to create a strong foundation for collaboration and change. We are eager to learn and to educate; to propose solutions; and to promote activism and engagement.
